Structure sampleIt is well known that the graphite structure of cast iron is related to the damping property of the material. Grey iron has a very good and high damping property. Nodular iron has a very poor damping property.

For certain applications the graphite structure is very critical. To improve the process stability and capability we have developed the structure sample. The structure sample is a kind of reference sampling which is taken from the liquid cast iron just before pouring. After solidification of the sample, the elastic and damping properties are measured by the RFDA inspector system. This is done at the pouring line (not in the laboratory) by the production operator. The information about the quality of the melting process is always available at the production floor and immediate action by the operator becomes possible.
