Kangaroos or Macropodidae are only found in the wild in Australia and New Guinea. The sixty-nine varieties substantially differ with regard to proportions and weight. The red kangaroo is easily two metres high and weighs ninety kilograms. All kangaroos, whether large or small, have one common characteristic. The kangaroo moves by jumping forwards with the aid of strong back legs and large feet. Kangaroos are mainly grass, leaf and grain eaters. On 15th July 1770, just after the discovery of Continental Australia, Captain James Cook states in his ship's log: 'I would have said it was a dog, if it hadn't jumped like a hare or a deer when running. With the exception of the head and the ears, which resembled those of a hare, it did not look like any European animal I have ever seen. We later had the animal for our meal and found it delicious.'
